Job Purpose and Background in summary 

Are you passionate about delivering world class product documentation to enable teams to contribute to a climate resilient, environmentally sustainable future? CDP are looking for a Senior Technical Writer to join our Product team to provide a critical contribution to CDP’s mission. This is an excellent opportunity to make an impact on how internal users and external customers interact with and use our products. 

You will utilise your skills in collaboration, content creation and auditing to help establish and mature CDP's Technical Writing domain. This work will focus on ensuring documentation is clear, accurate and supportive of the overall product goals with a large part updating and reviewing existing documentation to improve the usability. The role requires the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within CDP and externally, to analyze complex information and to think critically and innovatively.

About the Digital Directorate 

In 2023 CDP underwent a complete digital transformation, seeing us transition the annual disclosure cycle from a paper-based, human-intensive and vendor-dependent stack, to a completely in-house developed, modernised and scalable product that will revolutionise the customer-experience for both external and internal users. As part of this transformation we also built completely new teams, spanning across Design, Product, Infrastructure and Engineering.

Key responsibilities include:  


Documentation Planning:


  • Collaborate with product owners, designers, developers, and QA engineers to gather a more holistic understanding of requirements, timelines, features, and user needs.

  • Participate in sprint planning meetings to identify documentation needs for upcoming features or changes.

  • Engage with stakeholders to identify critical gaps or inconsistencies in existing documentation.

  • Prioritise both new documentation needs and revising existing documentation to ensure accuracy and consistency with product updates.

Content Creation:


  • In addition to writing new technical documentation, review, revise, and restructure outdated material. Ensure consistency with current features, updates, and standards.

  • Create visual content like process diagrams or instructional videos, and potentially participate in creating training material for customer-facing teams.

  • Develop comprehensive technical documentation, including but not limited to API guides, release notes, user guides, troubleshooting guides, and process workflows.

Content Review and Feedback:


  • Facilitate regular review cycles with the development and product teams to ensure technical accuracy, completeness, and alignment with the product roadmap.

  • Incorporate feedback from stakeholders to improve the clarity and usability of documentation.

  • Monitor user feedback and support tickets to identify common issues or areas where documentation can be improved.

Documentation Maintenance:


  • Regularly audit existing documentation to identify areas requiring updates and improvement, ensuring accuracy with the latest product releases.

  • Implement version control strategies and track revisions to ensure all changes are captured systematically.

Continuous Improvement:


  • Contribute to establishing best practices within the company for technical writing, ensuring compliance with industry standards.

  • Identify opportunities to automate documentation processes or improve efficiency through tools and templates.

You will have the following skills and experience: 

Essential criteria 


  • Proven experience as a Senior Technical Writer or similar role within a Product-led organisation, preferably with a focus on customer portals, and data collection

  • Experience of establishing and maturing a Technical Writing domain within an agile led digital organization 

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with in-house employees from various functions, as well as technical teams.

  • Project management experience, with the ability to manage projects from end-to-end, ensuring on-time delivery, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

  • Familiarity with industry best practices and trends in technical writing

This is a full time role based at CDP’s London office reporting to the Director of Product Owners.  

Salary and benefits:  £60,000 - £70,000 per annum, 30 days’ holiday plus bank holidays, generous non-contributory pension provision, Employee Assistance Programme, life assurance, training and development, flexible working opportunities and other benefits.
