Position Overview:The Deputy Director of State Social Media is responsible for the day-to-day management of our state-based social media team, serving as a supportive and hands-on leader. This role centers on providing guidance, mentorship, and operational support to the social media managers. You’ll ensure their work runs smoothly, and they have the tools and direction needed to produce high-quality, impactful content. The ideal candidate has a passion for helping others grow and thrives in a role that emphasizes operational excellence, problem-solving, and being a reliable go-to resource for the team.




In this role, you will work in partnership with the Vice President of Social Media to execute broader strategies while managing the social media team’s daily workflow, offering mentorship, and ensuring the team’s success in achieving the overall company’s goals.




Key Responsibilities:



  • Team Management & Mentorship: Lead and mentor a team of state social media managers, providing daily support and guidance to ensure their personal and professional growth. Be a resource they can turn to for feedback, advice, and encouragement.

  • Day-to-Day Operations: Oversee the day-to-day execution of social media activities across state newsrooms, ensuring alignment with company goals and timelines. Support the team in managing workflows and keeping projects on track.

  • Problem Solving & Support: Act as the go-to person for troubleshooting challenges that arise in the social media team’s daily work, providing quick solutions and helping manage any issues that may impede their progress.

  • Content Oversight: Ensure that content produced by state social media managers meets Courier’s editorial standards and aligns with each platform’s best practices. Review posts, provide constructive feedback, and offer guidance on improving engagement.

  • Collaborative Leadership: Serve as a liaison between the social media team and other departments, ensuring effective communication and that the team has everything they need to succeed.

  • Empathy & Encouragement: Cultivate a supportive and inclusive team environment, encouraging open communication, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Celebrate successes and ensure each team member feels valued and heard.

  • Training & Development: Provide ongoing training and coaching to help social media managers refine their skills and stay up-to-date with the latest trends, tools, and platform changes.

  • Tracking Progress & Reporting: Ensure timely and accurate reporting on social media performance, helping managers set goals, track progress, and adjust tactics to meet their objectives.




Qualifications:



  • 3-5 years of experience managing social media teams for a news outlet, nonprofit, or advocacy organization.

  • Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring a team with a collaborative and empathetic approach.

  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while providing day-to-day support to a distributed team.

  • Experience in social media content creation and familiarity with platform-specific best practices.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to provide clear and constructive feedback.

  • Passion for coaching and supporting the development of team members in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to adapt to evolving challenges, troubleshoot problems, and stay calm under pressure.




Preferred:



  • Experience working with remote teams and managing geographically distributed staff.

  • Background in local news, political advocacy, or civic engagement.
