We are currently looking for an Assistant Editor to join our team at Discover Magazine to contribute to editorial content production. This position requires strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills, along with a healthy dose of self-motivation and the ability to set priorities within a fast-paced environment. Ideally, the candidate has a background in science writing, which is our company’s main coverage area.


Discover magazine, launched in 1980, reaches its audience through a blend of topics ranging from physics and space exploration to health, biology, and environmental science. Discover draws in millions of readers through various online channels such as social media, DiscoverMagazine.com, and email newsletters.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Write assigned print and digital stories as directed by the Editorial Director and the Digital Editor.

 

  • Work with senior editorial to curate digital content for publication in Discover. Assist in assigning and editing stories for all platforms.

 

  • Prepare front-of-book departments or other elements in print issue as assigned. May include (but not limited to): Table of Contents, Letters, Hot Science stories, etc.
  • Work with art department to develop visual plans for all assigned stories/sections, suggesting art possibilities for assignments, and contacting researchers or institutions for relevant images.

 

  • Contribute story ideas at regularly scheduled pitch meetings for print and digital platforms.

 

  • Follow all style and/or SEO guidelines for written and edited stories. Meets all weekly web deadlines and print deadlines as established in the print production schedule.

 

  • Copyfit assigned stories and sections, including captions.

 

  • Review page proofs in the second and final rounds.

 

  • Responsible for administrative duties related to assigned stories or issues in progress, including correspondence with writers, researchers, and sometimes readers; appropriate filing of work orders, story drafts, story contact information, or other data relevant to assigned stories, etc.

 

  • Represent Discover at professional meetings and public events, as appropriate.

 

  • Other duties as assigned by the editorial director.


The candidate is required to:

·       Hold a bachelor’s degree in journalism, science communication, or other similar area.

·       Have at least 1 year of experience in journalism or writing, along with familiarity with science.

·       Be highly organized, able to meet strict deadlines, and able to multitask.

·       Possess strong line editing and copyediting skills.

·       Be familiar with Microsoft and Google suites of office products.

·       Be familiar with using ChatGPT and other AI tools for content production.

·       Have knowledge of developing SEO-optimized content.

·       Work preferably on US/Canadian East Coast time.

·       Have experience using a content management system.


The compensation range for this position is $45,000 to $65,000 CAD
