As a member of a matrixed team, the Tax Consultant will touch all aspects of the tax lifecycle, including participation in development of tax strategies, review of tax returns and tax provisions, and supporting positions on audit. Other key components of the role include teaching staff, identifying and leading or participating in projects to improve our efficiency, accuracy, and capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:
Represents tax department on system teams. Reviews changes in existing system for continued compliance with tax department needs. Verifies accuracy and completeness of tax calendar.
Reviews and/or plans federal and state/local income tax returns. Performs on-site review with business partners if required.
Reviews all research and analysis in preparation for compliance audits.
Assists in analyzing and reporting to management the potential impact of pending legislation as it relates to assigned companies' taxation and general corporate tax laws and regulations. Evaluates the cost and implements reporting procedures to follow enacted legislation.
Reviews tax returns including consolidated tax returns. Reviews record retention policies to provide continued support for tax returns for all open years.
Conducts quarterly meetings with business partners. Communicates tax issues and s listens for changes in the business environments. Develops contacts at the appropriate level to aid in providing timely tax response and planning opportunities.
Manages the development, on a quarterly basis, of the federal and state tax provision for the enterprise companies. This includes both statutory and GAAP financial reporting. Develops cash forecasts.
Manages all preparation of state and federal tax provisions for the use in establishing budgets and financial documents. Working with Planning and Investments to develop federal income tax provisions for five-year projection. Keeps the Investment Department advised of current tax situation to enable them to make investments that return the best after-tax yield.
Reviews all research and analysis on tax strategies. Develops models used to assist analysis.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to Tax Director/Officer/Executive.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Undergraduate degree with studies in tax, law or accounting.
License/Certification/Designation: Progress toward CPA certification or law degree.
Experience: Minimum of six years in insurance tax field for a life or multi-line insurance company, public accounting firm or law firm.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Knowledge of federal and state/local tax law. Knowledge of statutory and/or GAAP accounting. Knowledge of modeling and tax systems. Knowledge of research techniques. Ability to communicate with management, insurance regulators, IRS agents and consultants. Ability to analyze operating results to project tax consequences and to anticipate regulatory questions.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, proficiencies and experiences may take precedence.
Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.
