We are seeking a Staff Tax Accountant in the Private Client Services group of our subsidiary Clearstead Trust located in Portland, ME. The candidate will play a key role in preparing trust and personal income tax returns, ensuring tax compliance, and assisting with client onboarding and cross-selling of tax services. 


This position reports with a dotted line to local leadership and a hard line to the head of the trust tax group within our parent company. The ideal candidate will have a strong tax background, excellent communication skills, and the ability to collaborate across teams.


This position allows for work-from-home flexibility.


In this position, you will: 


Tax Preparation & Filing:

  • Prepare and file trust and personal income tax returns, ensuring accuracy and compliance with tax regulations.
  • Identify tax-saving strategies and provide recommendations to clients.
  • Stay informed on changes to tax laws affecting trusts and personal income tax.

Tax Compliance:

  • Ensure accurate and timely tax filing for trusts and individuals, meeting all regulatory requirements.
  • Respond to inquiries from tax authorities and clients on complex tax matters.
  • Conduct research on regulatory changes and provide insights to support trust tax strategies.

Client Engagement & Cross-Selling:

  • Identify opportunities to introduce additional tax services to existing clients, such as estate planning and tax advisory.
  • Assist in onboarding clients into the firm’s tax services, ensuring smooth integration with wealth management strategies.
  • Collaborate with wealth advisors and trust officers to align tax planning with clients' broader financial objectives.

Internal Collaboration:

  • Work closely with local leadership and the trust tax group at the parent company to ensure consistent and efficient service delivery.
  • Support the development of processes for tax compliance and client service delivery.
  • Participate in cross-departmental initiatives to enhance client service and firm operations.

Requirements

    

The successful candidate will have:

  • CPA or EA Designation is highly desired.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience preparing trust and personal income tax returns.
  • Strong understanding of federal and state tax laws related to trusts and personal income taxation.
  • Experience with tax software and accounting tools (e.g., QuickBooks, CCH Axcess, UltraTax).
  • Excellent communication and client relationship skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working with high-net-worth clients in a trust company or wealth management firm.
  • Knowledge of estate planning and trust tax implications.
  • Demonstrated ability to cross-sell tax and wealth management services.
