JMIR Publications is seeking a full-time Scientific Editor to join our editorial team. We are interested in applicants with expertise in the field of digital health research / medical informatics and will consider candidates with expertise in public health, health services research, machine learning and artificial intelligence applications in adjacent fields more broadly.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing editorial team as it supports a world-class community of editors-in-chief, editorial board members, reviewers, and authors.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Scientific Editorial Director, Dr. Tiffany Leung and working closely with the Founding Publisher, Dr. Gunther Eysenbach as well as the editorial team, the Scientific Editor will help shape, lead, and execute scientific activities supporting editorial strategy, publication quality, and research integrity.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assess submitted research papers and make recommendations with respect to our journal transfer policies and practices, section assignments, and other key judgments regarding quality and potential impact, collaborating with our editorial director, editors-in-chief, journal section editors, and editorial team members
- Support or make rapid and efficient editorial decisions related to papers submitted to JMIR Publications journals
- Oversee aspects of the peer review process, particularly issues relating to standards, quality, and consistency and in support of more innovative peer-review processes
- Establishing relationships with researchers through outreach to the scientific community
- Recruit top-quality content for publication across the portfolio of JMIR Publications journals
- Assist in recruiting section editors, theme issue editors, editorial board members, and peer reviewers across a range of related subject areas
- Work collaboratively with academic editorial board members and editors
- From time to time, write or edit collaborative editorials, or content in support of knowledge translation, our blog, and various social media outlets.
- Support the editorial team in maintaining the highest standards of publication ethics, according to the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)
- Champion ways to improve the diversity of authors and editorial contributors and to foster a more equitable and inclusive editorial process
- Support the Founding Publisher and Scientific Editorial Director in identifying and developing opportunities to strengthen the portfolio in line with JMIR Publications strategy, ensuring best-in-class representation and inclusive and equitable participation of communities of interest, including editors, editorial board members, and peer review communities
- Represent JMIR Publications at industry, scientific and academic events, and with external stakeholders and policy makers.
Qualifications
Education:
PhD, or MD or MD/PhD in the field of medical informatics or digital health, or adjacent fields such as public health, health services research; MSc or Masters in these fields may also be considered when there is applicable experience below
Experience:
- Active or prior biomedical scientist or academic clinician with expertise in medical informatics or digital health or adjacent fields such as public health or health services research with a basic understanding of biomedical statistics
- Editorial experience in reviewing manuscripts for quality, methodological accuracy, relevance, contribution, and potential impact
- Experience communicating with authors, reviewers, and editors
- Proven publication record (peer-reviewed papers as first author), ideally history of publishing with JMIR Publications journals
- Familiarity with reporting standards and ethical guidelines for publishing as well as awareness of the current new developments and changes in the publishing environment, such as preprints
- Expert in at least a subset of research methodologies and evaluative methods involving human subjects research or health services research, including but not limited to quantitative methods (e.g., randomized trials, cohort studies, etc) or qualitative methods.

- Science standard-bearer who can support all facets of evaluating and disseminating high-quality research from leading authors in the field
Location:
We prefer candidates located in Toronto, Canada, but will welcome candidates from outside of the Greater Toronto Area or outside of Canada.
