Job Title: Payroll Accountant
Department: Accounting
Manager: Payroll Manager
Job Purpose:
The Payroll Accountant will be responsible for processing payroll for our staff and faculty including exempt and non-exempt employees, as well as creating and maintaining payroll reports/records, and handling employee inquiries on all payroll-related matters. The Payroll Accountant will also be responsible for the reconciliation of bi-weekly payroll journal entries, posting and reconciling payroll cash entries, and reconciliation of all outstanding payroll items at month-end.
Primary remote position that may require some in office expectations up to twice a month.
Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Working with Human Resources departments to ensure timely and accurate payroll processing, ensuring compliance with all applicable state and federal wage and hour laws
- Maintaining and protecting confidential payroll data
- Processing requests for wage garnishments and other deductions as needed
- Creating and analyzing reports utilizing internal HRIS database, Workday
- Providing excellent customer support and troubleshooting employee questions as it pertains to the payroll process
- General Ledger (GL) journal entry creation and posting; GL and cash account review, maintenance and analysis, and reconciliations
- Reconciliation of outstanding payroll items at month-end as well as monthly garnishment reconciliation
- Periodic and quarterly tax reconciliation
- Performing other job-related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:

- Comfortable partnering with the other members of the Payroll/Accounting team and members of the Human resources department
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Knowledge and understanding of wage and hour laws and federal, state and local taxation required
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in relevant subject area required, including but not limited to Accounting, Business, Finance, Human Resources, etc. (experience to be considered in lieu of education requirements)
Experience:
- 1-3 years of combined payroll processing and accounting experience; accounting experience must include general ledger (GL)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; Intermediate-level skills in Microsoft Excel required
- Experience utilizing a payroll system or HRIS; Workday (HRIS) is a plus
Working Conditions:
- Ability to complete sedentary work for extended periods of time
- Ability to operate office equipment including laptop, personal computer, phone, etc.
- Ability to meet travel requirements (up to 10%)
