A Lot About You

We are seeking a news-obsessed, results-driven editor in chief to set the strategic vision for Yahoo News in Canada. In this new role overseeing the newsroom, you will be responsible for editorial direction, audience development, operations, and Canadian partnerships. The ideal candidate has experience and demonstrated success in setting and executing strategy and leading a team to grow new audiences, deepen engagement and establish habitual and loyal relationships with readers.  

The Yahoo News Canada team creates content experiences consumed by hundreds of thousands of users daily across News, Lifestyle, Entertainment and Finance. As such, this role requires a seasoned journalist and strategic leader with demonstrated experience in digital media, superior editorial judgment and grounding in journalistic standards as well as strong organizational and communication skills.

The ideal candidate will have a clear vision of how to evolve Yahoo News to best serve Canadian audiences with a focus on quality curation and impactful stories.
 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the newsroom, define the editorial vision and guide the content strategy to drive audience growth, engagement, and retention for Yahoo News Canada

  • Evolve the creation and curation of content in all Yahoo News products to improve quality, usefulness, context and packaging

  • Drive fresh thinking and innovation as we reinvent our product portfolio in 2024 and beyond

  • Realize user growth and engagement through producing and curating excellent content in ways that meet our audiences' needs and create habits

  • Help drive coverage plans for tentpole events across a variety of content categories

  • Lead the development, tracking and analysis of rigorous KPIs related to content, audience engagement, and editorial operations

  • Use insights to make adjustments to editorial strategies, including how we deploy resources to make improvements that will meaningfully produce growth

  • Partner with Yahoo’s global editorial teams to share best practices and create new systems and workflows

  • Collaborate with commercial teams to identify and build revenue opportunities to grow the business, including sponsored or branded content, affiliate and e-commerce revenue, events and strategic partnerships

  • Build a culture of excellence that cultivates talent and drives creativity while embracing speed, rigor and high standards

  • Be a strong voice for Yahoo News Canada, driving strategic transformation and culture change inside the organization and supporting the evolution of brand perception externally
     

Qualifications:

  • Relevant leadership experience in developing and executing innovative digital editorial strategies, with direct oversight of a team of journalists in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, digital environment 

  • A record of multi-platform leadership with a knowledge of, and ability to lead, the disciplines necessary to succeed on digital platforms - including curation, aggregation, SEO, analytics, data visualization, social strategy & engagement, and breaking news.

  • In-depth knowledge of the Canadian digital media environment, combined with the ability to articulate a compelling vision for Yahoo News in Canada and an understanding of how to lead the team in pursuit of that goal 

  • Demonstrated record of successfully developing, and negotiating business and organizational relationships – partnerships, collaborations, and vendor relationships.

  • Passion for management, mentorship and training of newsroom talent

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills and ability to reach across teams to develop working relationships with other areas of the Yahoo global organization in a hybrid or remote environment

Details:

  • Position reports to VP of Content, Yahoo News 

  • Location agnostic within Canada. Office space available in Toronto as needed / if preferred

  • Travel as needed, primarily for company offsites or events, conferences, team meetings

  • The News portfolio in Canada includes the Yahoo homepage and mobile app, along with the Yahoo News site (ca.news.yahoo.com) and Entertainment and Life brands

The compensation for this position ranges from $130,375.00 - $226,825.00/yr and will vary depending on factors such as your location, skills and experience. The compensation package may also include incentive compensation opportunities in the form of discretionary annual bonus or commissions, in addition to equity incentives. Yahoo has a high degree of flexibility around employee location and hybrid working. In fact, our flexible-hybrid approach to work is one of the things our employees rave about.
