Description


Christianity Today (CT) is hiring a full-time Black Church Editor to research, write, and edit compelling ideas and news articles and other content as needed that center on the Black community with emphasis on Black evangelical and Protestant churches and leaders in America. The editor’s work will be characterized by a faithful, journalistic integrity that has both historical and theological rigor. This position is part of CT's growing editorial team and directly linked to the Big Tent Initiative, which seeks to promote Christian unity while celebrating its diversity and building bridges of understanding across our cultural, ideological, and denominational divisions through creative multimedia content, courageous conversations, and cultivation of community. The Black Church Editor is an important part of CT’s efforts to build a “central nervous system for the global body of Christ,” offering constructive guidance and accurate reporting on the church and culture both for the Black community and from the Black community for all.


Job Functions and Responsibilities


1. Content Development and Sourcing:

  • Conduct research and generate ideas for articles, series, and multimedia projects that resonate with Black audiences
  • Cultivate writers by tracking not only their areas of interest and study but also their doctrinal commitments, views on key issues, and public comportment
  • Edit articles submitted by contributors for clarity, accuracy, and adherence to editorial standards
  • Uphold the organization's editorial guidelines, core theological commitments, and standards of journalistic integrity

2. Storytelling and Representation:

  • Elevate ideas and stories of the Black Church as well as the historical and current contributions of Black Christians, underscoring their influence in both the Church and society
  • Address significant issues such as racial reconciliation, community health, and cultural identity while celebrating Black heritage, theology, and Christian leadership
  • Partner with the Big Tent Editorial Director and CT’s media team to support podcasts, video content, and social media campaigns, engaging younger Black audiences and amplifying their voices

3. Community Engagement:

  • Work with the Big Tent Editorial Director to participate in community events and Big Tent conversations on social and political issues impacting Black Christians
  • Cultivate relationships with churches, nonprofits, thought leaders, writers, and readers, contributing to CT’s mission to foster unity and representation within the body of Christ
  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned

Expectations: Outputs and Outcomes

1. Content Production:

  • Produce articles for CT Magazine, both print and digital. Responsibilities will primarily include reporting and writing articles as well as acquiring and editing op-eds. Write and/or edit a minimum of one article per week

2. Cultivating Relationships:

  • Work with the Big Tent Editorial Director to support consultative and collaborative conversations with Black communities, providing a space for open and honest dialogue about social and political issues impacting the Black Church including dimensions of identity, experience and calling

3. Collaboration:

  • Work closely with fellow editors, writers, and freelancers to ensure timely delivery of content. Participate in staff meetings
  • Commit approximately 25% of time to the Big Tent Initiative and working with the Big Tent Editorial Director
  • Partner with the Global Editorial Director and the NextGen and Global Initiatives teams, as needed
Requirements


Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Master of Divinity or equivalent theological education is preferred

Experience:

  • 3-5 years in journalism or editorial roles, with a focus on news and opinion writing
  • The ideal candidate will have worked with both print and digital platforms

Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes:

  • Evangelical Protestant local church culture
  • Microsoft Office, WordPress, Adobe Suite
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Deep understanding of Black church dynamics, history, and current issues affecting the Black Christian community in the U.S.
